How do you convert mg to mcg?

This is fixed in the metric system, not an estimate. One milligram always holds exactly one thousand micrograms, the same way one meter always holds one thousand millimeters. The relationship never changes, no matter what substance you are measuring.

mcg vs mg: what is the difference?
A milligram is 1000 times larger than a microgram. So mg is the bigger unit and mcg is the smaller one.
Here is the trap. A 500 mcg dose is half of a 1 mg dose, not double it. People see 500 next to 1 and assume 500 must mean more medicine. It does not. The unit decides the size, not the number in front of it. Always read the unit first, then the number.

How to convert mg to mcg in your head
Slide the decimal point three places to the right. That is the whole trick.

Common mistakes with mg and mcg
- Dividing instead of multiplying. Going from mg to mcg always makes the number bigger. If your answer came out smaller, you ran the formula backwards.
- Assuming the bigger number is the stronger dose. 250 mcg is smaller than 1 mg, even though 250 looks larger than 1. The unit wins, not the digit.
- Reading µg as mg. These differ by a factor of 1000. In a medical setting that gap is dangerous, which is the whole reason mcg is the preferred spelling.
- Losing a zero. Because the conversion is all about zeros, dropping or adding one throws the answer off by a factor of ten. Count them twice on doses that matter.
