Overtime Calculator
This tool estimates gross overtime pay before taxes and deductions. Overtime rules and rates vary by country, state, and employer. Check your local labor laws or your employer for exact figures.
Overtime pay is the extra money you earn for hours worked beyond your normal schedule, usually paid at a higher rate. In the US, hours past 40 in a week are typically paid at time and a half, meaning 1.5 times your regular rate. The calculator above works out your total for any rate and any number of overtime hours. Below, we explain how overtime is calculated and show the rates for common wages.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime pay is your hourly rate multiplied by an overtime rate, then multiplied by the number of overtime hours. The standard overtime rate in the US is time and a half, or 1.5 times your normal pay.
The formula has three steps. First, work out your overtime hourly rate: regular rate × 1.5. Then multiply that by your overtime hours to get overtime pay. Finally, add your regular pay to get the total.
Example: you earn $20 an hour and work 10 overtime hours at time and a half. Your overtime rate is $20 × 1.5, which is $30 an hour. Ten hours at $30 is $300 in overtime pay. Add your regular 40 hours at $20 ($800) and your total for the week is $1,100.
How much is overtime pay?
Overtime pay depends on your base rate and the multiplier. At time and a half, every overtime hour pays 1.5 times your normal wage. At double time, it pays twice. The table below shows the overtime hourly rate for common wages.
| Regular rate | Time and a half (1.5×) | Double time (2×) |
|---|---|---|
| $15 | $22.50 | $30.00 |
| $16 | $24.00 | $32.00 |
| $17 | $25.50 | $34.00 |
| $18 | $27.00 | $36.00 |
| $19 | $28.50 | $38.00 |
| $20 | $30.00 | $40.00 |
| $22 | $33.00 | $44.00 |
| $25 | $37.50 | $50.00 |
| $30 | $45.00 | $60.00 |
These are hourly overtime rates. Multiply by your overtime hours to get the pay. For a full breakdown of time and a half at any wage, use the time and a half calculator.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. It is the most common overtime rate in the US. If you earn $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour. The extra half comes from the 0.5 added on top of your normal rate for each overtime hour.
What is double time?
Double time means twice your regular rate. Some employers pay it for holidays, Sundays, or hours worked well beyond the normal overtime threshold. At $20 an hour, double time is $40 an hour. Double time is less common than time and a half and usually comes from a contract or company policy rather than federal law.
How many hours is overtime?
In the US, overtime usually starts after 40 hours in a workweek under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Work 45 hours and the first 40 are regular pay, the last 5 are overtime. Some states have daily overtime rules too. California, for example, pays overtime after 8 hours in a single day. Rules vary, so check your state and your employer.
How do you calculate overtime from total hours?
If you only know your total hours for the week, split them at the overtime threshold. Everything up to 40 hours is regular. Everything above is overtime. The calculator does this automatically in the “Auto-split from total hours” mode. Enter your total and the threshold, and it separates regular and overtime pay for you.
Worked example: you clock 46 hours at $15 an hour. The first 40 hours are regular pay ($600). The remaining 6 hours are overtime at $22.50, which is $135. Your total is $735.
Does overtime get taxed more?
Overtime is not taxed at a special higher rate. It is taxed like the rest of your income. The confusion comes from withholding. A bigger paycheck can push more of your pay into a higher withholding band for that period, so it looks like more tax was taken. Over the full year it evens out based on your actual total income.
How to work out overtime pay for the month or year
The calculator can project a single week’s pay across longer periods. Pick a period in the dropdown and it multiplies your weekly total out to biweekly, monthly, or yearly figures. This assumes you work the same hours every week, so treat the yearly number as an estimate. To turn a steady pay rate into a full yearly figure, use the annual income calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is time and a half for $18 an hour?
Time and a half for $18 an hour is $27. Multiply 18 by 1.5. Each overtime hour at this wage pays $27.
What is overtime pay for $20 an hour?
At time and a half, $20 an hour becomes $30 an hour for overtime. At double time it becomes $40 an hour.
Is overtime always 1.5 times pay?
No. Time and a half is the standard, but some employers pay double or triple time for holidays or extreme hours. Your contract or company policy sets any rate above the legal minimum.
Do salaried workers get overtime?
Some do, some do not. It depends on your salary level and job duties under labor law. Many salaried roles above a certain pay threshold are exempt from overtime. Check your classification with your employer.
How do I calculate my overtime rate per hour?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier. For time and a half, multiply by 1.5. For double time, multiply by 2. That gives your overtime rate for each extra hour.
